Manchester United could sign RB Salzburg striker Erling Braut Haaland in the January transfer window and loan him back to the Austrian club for the rest of the season.

That’s according to ESPN which claims to have been told by sources close to the Old Trafford club that such a plan is under consideration.

Haaland has already scored 26 goals in 18 games so far this season and is being monitored by over 40 of Europe’s top clubs. But Salzburg have slapped an £85 million price tag on the 19-year-old which has narrowed the field down considerably. Only Manchester United, Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona are regarded as serious contenders with perhaps Bayern Munich and one or two other Premier League in with an outside chance.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows Haaland from their time together at Norwegian side Molde. There were reports over the weekend that the pair were exchanging text messages earlier this year.

Meanwhile, United are expected to meet with representatives of Tahith Chong in a bid to hammer out a new deal.

The Dutch teenager is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with interest from Serie A giants Juventus. But Metro claims United are confident he will sign a new deal at Old Trafford. The Premier League outfit have offered a new deal worth up to £25,000 a week including bonuses.

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Hartlepool keeper Brad Young. The 17-year-old has been called up to England’s youth team set-up following a string of impressive performances for the National League side.
