Four Names On List
Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is said to be on a short-list of four candidates for the vacant head coach’s job at Bayern Munich.
Bayern sacked Niko Kovac at the weekend following a 5-1 defeat at Borussia Monchengladbach. The result leaves them in fourth place, four points behind Monchengladbach who are now clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
Wenger, Southampton manager Ralf Rangnick, Ajax’s Erik ten Hag and former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri are reported to be on the short-list although ten Hag was reported on Monday to have rebuffed an approach from Bayern. He coached their reserve side between 2013 and 2015.
“Yes I can confirm I will stay,” he told reporters at a press conference ahead of Ajax’s Champions League clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this evening.
“I feel a strong connection with my team, everyone at Ajax. I can confirm I will stay at Ajax this season.
“Bayern is a fantastic club, it is still in my heart but I am at Ajax. I’m not a dreamer.
“I am focusing on Ajax and live for today and tomorrow’s game, which is important.”
Wenger has been out of work since he left Arsenal at the end of the 2017-18 campaign. But age goes against the 70-year-old who will be up against much younger rivals for the job.
Bayern have had a mixed bag of results so far this season. They defeated Tottenham Hotspur 7-2 in a Champions League clash in north London last month. However, Saturday’s 5-1 reversal was the final straw for the Bayern board. It was this result alongside defeats at Hoffenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt and draws with Hertha Berlin, RB Leipzig and Augsburg that led to action being taken on Sunday.
