Werner The Preferred Option In January?
Manchester United could make a move for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner instead of Juventus’s Mario Mandzukic in January.
The Daily Express claims Germany international Werner is seen as a better long-term prospect as he is ten years younger than the 33-year-old Mandzukic.
Werner has been linked in the past with Liverpool although the Reds now appear to have cooled their interest. However, he has scored eight goals in 11 appearances in all competitions for Leipzig so far this season leading to rumours of a January bid from Manchester United.
The Bundesliga side responded to a summer where there were no acceptable offers for Werner by offering him a new deal which he signed at the end of August. He is now under contract until 2023.
Leipzig have earned a reputation for being tough negotiators in the transfer market and are unlikely to sanction any move in the January window for one of their star players.
United are expected to be in the market for a new striker this winter having failed to adequately replace Romelu Lukaku. The Red Devils have scored just 10 Premier League goals all season with four of those coming in their opening-weekend win over Chelsea.
Manchester United striker Angel Gomes looks set to sign a new contract at Old Trafford. The 19-year-old has broken into the first team this season and has impressed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Reports last month suggested United had opened negotiations following reports of interest from Barcelona.
