Manchester United face competition from Real Madrid for Red Bull Salzburg’s teenage goalscoring sensation Erling Braut Haaland.
United and Arsenal are among the 45 clubs who have told Salzburg to keep them informed of Haaland’s situation. However, Spanish newspaper Marca claims Real Madrid are also keeping a close eye on the 19-year-old who has scored 18 goals in 11 competitive games for the Austrian side so far this season.
Haaland first came to prominence this summer when he scored nine goals for Norway’s Under-20 World Cup side in a 12-0 victory over Honduras. He then became the first player since Wayne Rooney in 2004 to score a hat-trick on his Champions League debut when he scored three in a 6-2 victory over Belgian side Genk. He also scored one against Liverpool at Anfield after initially being named on the substitutes’ bench due to illness.
Real have made a habit in recent years of signing promising youth players including Vincius Junior, Rodrygo and Haaland’s compatriot Martin Odegaard.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows Haaland well having worked with the youngster when the pair were at Norwegian side Molde. He was sold in January of this year to Salzburg for a fee of €5 million (at that time worth around £4.5 million).
United perhaps have the edge in the pursuit of Haaland. He is represented by relatives although they are being advised by Mino Raiola whom the Red Devils know very well from their dealings over the transfers of Raiola clients Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The relationship between club and agent has been fractious at times but that’s also the case with Real Madrid. Club president Florentino Perez has not always seen eye to eye with Raiola.
