Martinelli Had Trials At Old Trafford
Arsenal teenager Gabriel Martinelli was on target twice for the Gunners as they defeated Belgian side Standard Liege 4-0 in a Europa League group match on Thursday. But the 18-year-old Brazilian was turned down by Manchester United before he moved to the Emirates.
Martinelli’s brace took his tally for the season to four after he scored twice in the 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup last week. He made his Premier League debut when he came on for the final six minutes of Arsenal’s victory over Newcastle United in August.
Football Gossip reported in March when Arsenal were first interested in Martinelli that he’d had the chance to sign for United. But the Red Devils ended their interest two years ago.
“Between 2015 and 2017 I went there four times and trained for about 15 days,” Martinelli said after the win over Forest.
“I asked to take a picture with Evra, Fellaini and other guys. Pogba knew I was Brazilian and asked if everything was okay with me and where I was playing.”
Martinelli was hailed by Arsenal boss Unai Emery following the win over Standard Liege, but the Spaniard pointed out that the youngster had played out of position.
“He prefers to play as a left winger – he also played as a right winger. I am using him as a striker because he played in that position in Brazil,” said Emery/
“Striker is not the best position for him. But the first thing in his mind is to help us.”
