Local Rivals No Longer Interested
Manchester United may not have to battle against Manchester City for the signature of Benfica defensive midfielder Florentino Luis.
It was reported last week that scouts from Old Trafford had watched Luis in action the weekend before last in Benfica’s victory over Braga. It has also been reported that Manchester City are interested in Luis.
However, Portugese newspaper A Bola claims City’s pursuit in the 20-year-old is over following the summer signing of Rodri from Atletico Madrid.
Football Gossip reported United’s interest in Luis as long ago as March of this year. That there was no summer bid from the Red Devils was down to two factors. First of all he signed a new deal with Benfica earlier this year. There is no word official word on the size of the release clause but it is being put at between €60 million and €120 million (£55-110 million).
Secondly, Luis has publicly stated that he wants to assert himself at Benfica before moving on.
United weren’t the only club to have scouts at the recent Benfica game with Braga. Premier League rivals Norwich City also had a representative at the game as did Lyon, Bordeaux, Atalanta, Sevilla, Villareal and Celta Vigo.
Manchester United scouts regularly watch Benfica games and Luis is expected to be monitored for the rest of the season.
