Barcelona To Offer ‘Lifetime Contract’ To Messi

Deal Similar To Ones Offered Xavi And Iniesta

Lionel Messi Barcelona news

Barcelona are proposing a new contract for Lionel Messi that would keep the Argentine legend at the Nou Camp for the remainder of his career.

It was revealed at the weekend that Messi has a clause in the current deal he has with Barcelona allowing him to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of this season. The clause could only be activated if he moves to a lesser league and while what constitutes a lesser league has not been specified it is thought to include competitions in North America, the Middle East and Japan.

Messi had the clause put into the deal as he wanted to see if he was still physically fit enough at the end of this campaign to continue playing in La Liga.

The 32-year-old contract expires in 2021 so effectively it is a break clause one year early.

Barcelona released a statement following the revelation saying they have  “no doubt he will stay for many years.”

However, Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo reports that Barca are proposing a contract for life for Messi. Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu has had the idea of some time and is expected to put it to the club’s Assembly Of Committees.

Barca granted similar deals to Xavi and Andre Iniesta. However, both subsequently left for clubs in Qatar and Japan.
