Defender Reveals Everton Interest
Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo says he will look to leave the club in January if he isn’t selected by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Rojo made just two Premier League starts last season along with three appearances off the subs’ bench and has yet to figure for United so far this season.
But speaking to Argentine newspaper Ole, Rojo suggested he had the chance to leave this summer and was only selected by coach Lionel Scaloni for Argentina’s international squad for the friendlies with Chile and Mexico because he’d made a number of appearances pre-season.
“I talked to Scaloni, he told me that he was happy because in the pre-season I had played many games, that I looked good and that was why he called me, but that I have to play,” said the 29-year-old.
“I am sure that to play for the national team you have to be playing for your club. You have to be there always and when you are here you have to show why.”
“It is difficult to leave when you are at such a large club. I had the possibility of a move to Everton, but due to decisions of the club or the manager it could not be done.
“Now I have to fight it until December and he does not pick me, I will try to leave. The World Cup qualifiers and the Copa America are coming and I want to be part of that . I do not want to be out again, I want to exhaust all the possibilities and compete for the right to be here. ”
Manchester United signed one central defender this summer in the shape of Harry Maguire while Chris Smalling left the club for a season-long loan with Roma.
Smalling has hinted at a possible prolonged stay in Italy if all goes well for him.
“To be able to have the chance at a big club, and then if it prolongs and the club is happy, then I can definitely see a longer term future in Italy,” he said.
“I think this is an opportunity that came to me that I was very interested in and I’m very eager to come.
“It happened very quickly and I think if I focus on the next game, getting up to speed with training, in terms of the manager’s methods and then hopefully have a very good season, then see what happens.”
