Tierney, Luiz Arrive, Iwobi Goes
Arsenal signed Kieran Tierney and David Luiz and sold Alex Iwobi in what was a busy transfer deadline-day for the Gunners.
Tierney arrived from Celtic in a deal that could see the Gunners pay as much as £25 million for the Scotland international. Luiz moved across London from Chelsea in an £8 million transfer after being told by new Blues boss Frank Lampard there were no guarantees he could feature as a first-team regular this season.
Those two new signings took the total value of Arsenal transfer signings for this window to £155 million making them the largest spenders in the Premier League this time around. It followed rumours towards the end of last season that there would only be £45 million available for new signings.
However, the departure of Alex Iwobi for Everton has come as something of a surprise. The Toffees will pay an initial £28 million for the Nigerian with add-ons and bonuses bringing the total transfer fee to £34 million. Iwobi came up through the youth ranks at Arsenal and scored 15 goals in 149 first-team appearances for the Gunners.
But Arsenal fans will be pleased at the club’s new signings. The arrival of Luiz will strengthen the centre of defence while Tierney is one of British football’s most exciting young prospects.
However, the £72 million spent last week on Nicolas Pepe has marked a statement of intent for the Gunners. The Ivory Coast international scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists for Lille last season and Arsenal fans will hope he spearheads a return to Champions League football after three years away.
