Double Deadline-Day Signing?
Arsenal are hoping to seal the signings of Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney and Chelsea central defender David Luiz.
The Gunners have agreed a £25 million fee for Scotland international Tierney. The fee will be structured so that Celtic get more money up front. Two previous bids had seen the Scottish side reject offers that were more reliant on add-ons and bonuses. Celtic will also receive a portion of any subsequent transfer fee.
Tierney will travel south today for talks over a contract with Arsenal that will see him initially earn around £75,000 a week.
The 22-year-old has missed the start of Celtic’s pre-season through injury and he could be out for eight weeks although the likelihood is that the lay-off will be slightly shorter.
“If that is the case, then he goes with everybody’s best wishes,” Celtic boss Neil Lennon said when told of the transfer. “He’s a superb player and will be a big loss to us.”
News broke on Wednesday night over a possible Arsenal bid for Luiz. The Brazil international is reported to have gone on strike at Chelsea in a bid to force through a move.
The 32-year-old played in 36 of the Blues’ 38 Premier League games last season and completed the full 90 minutes in all but one of those games.
New Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is refusing to offer the guarantee of similar game-time this season leaving Luiz to reflect on his future.
The defender only signed a new two-year contract at Stamford Bridge in May but Chelsea are willing to do a deal for a fee of around £8 million.
