Arsenal are being linked with RB Leipzig central defender Dayot Upamecano but are put off by the Bundesliga side’s price tag.

The Gunners are still hoping to recruit a central defender before Thursday’s transfer deadline. Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani has been linked but the Serie A giants prefer a permanent deal rather than the loan move that Arsenal are offering. Wolves are also being linked.

Head of football Raul Sanllehi has switched his attentions to France Under-21 international Upamecano. But the 20-year-old is valued by Leipzig at £50 million and having splashed out £72 million on Nicolas Pepe last week Arsenal’s pockets won’t cope with another big-money signing.

This isn’t the first time the Gunners have been linked with Upamecano. He was on the club’s radar when Arsene Wenger was manager and Football Gossip first reported Arsenal’s interest in March 2015 when he was 16 years old and playing for French side Valenciennes. Manchester United were also interested and had agreed a transfer fee of £500,000. However, his wage demands scuppered both Arsenal’s interest and a move to Old Trafford.

Upamecano ended up with Red Bull Salzburg before joining Leipzig in 2017. He has gone on to make 75 first-team appearances with the German club.
