Diop Rumours Rumble On
Manchester United will have to pay up to £75 million for West Ham United defender Issa Diop, according to reports today.
The French defender is the subject of interest from Old Trafford following a solid good first season with the Hammers. The east London club signed him for £22 million from Toulouse last summer.
Rumours claim West Ham are demanding Manchester United striker Anthony Martial as part of any deal but that has been rejected by the Red Devils. Speculation in some quarters claim that particular demand was a means of the Hammers digging in their heels. Other outlets claim Phil Jones could be offered in what would be a like-for-like replacement.
But the Daily Mirror claims today that West Ham are looking for a price that would see Diop valued at the same as Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.
Diop is certainly happy at West Ham. Speaking only last month he said: West Ham is like a family. They have a lot of fans and they love the club. They don’t necessarily want the best players but they want a good guy. Players who want to play for the shirt. Players willing to give everything on the pitch.”
Manchester United are in the market for a central defender this summer. Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly was their first choice but a valuation in excess of £100 million has put them off. Diop is 22 and has less experience but his price tag is similarly steep. The bigwigs at Old Trafford will be looking for a significant reduction before any deal can be done.
Inter Sales To Hold Up Lukaku Move
Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku’s move to Inter Milan depends on whether or not the Serie A side can move players on before the end of the month.
Any deal for the Belgium international won’t be done until after Inter’s financial year end on 30 June, but in the meantime the Italian club need to move players on.
Mauro Icardi is the most obvious example. The Argentina striker has long been on United’s watch-list and he looks set to be moved on following the breakdown of his relationship with Inter’s fans. A cash-plus-player deal involving Icardi, Lukaku and a cash settlement could be on the cards. But Icardi’s wife, the model Wanda Nara, is notoriously difficult to deal with and that in itself could be deal-breaker.
Inter need to sell around €30 million of talent before the end of the month in order to comply with Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules.
New Deal For Mata
Juan Mata looks set to sign a one-year contract extension with Manchester United. The Spaniard becomes a free agent on 30 June but he will sign a one-year deal with the club.
Mata had been linked with a return to Spain.
