Manchester United have approached Barcelona over Croatia international midfielder Ivan Rakitic according to reports from Catalunya.

Rakitic looks to be surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp following the signing of Frenkie de Jong from Ajax. But Sport newspaper claims an approach from Old Trafford was made a few days ago. The Croatian has always said that he wants to continue playing for Barcelona and isn’t interested in leaving the La Liga champions.

However, United’s interest will come as a surprise to many as it goes against the club’s policy. Rakitic is 31 years old and the Premier League side tend not to sign players over the age of 30. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was an exception but the Swede was signed on a free transfer and on a one-year contract.

Arsenal have also been linked.

Aarons On United Wishlist

Manchester United are also interested in Norwich City defender Max Aarons and will target the 19-year-old if they fail to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace.

Sky Sports claims Palace are also interested in Aarons and will make a move if they sell Wan-Bissaka to United.

United have already seen a bid of £40 million for Wan-Bissaka turned down by Palace. They are expected to return with a fresh bid of £50 million. The south London side have put a valuation of £60 million on the England Under-21 international.
