Reports today are linking Manchester United with a fresh move for the Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.
The France World Cup-winner has hinted at an exit from the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium this summer after releasing a video earlier this week that suggested he was finally ready to move on. Barcelona have been linked.
Griezmann has a release clause of £107 million in his contract with Atletico and while some of the Barcelona hierarchy are willing to pay that sort of fee there are some who believe the money would be better spent on a younger player. Griezmann is 28.
United were linked with Griezmann the summer before last. However, Atletico picked up a transfer ban and offered the Frenchman an improved contract to keep him at the club.
The Independent claims that contact has been made between Griezmann and United although the report suggests the player’s representatives made contact this time around.
Griezmann’s age, coupled with the huge fee, could be a problem for United. Jose Mourinho found his efforts to sign players in their late-twenties scuppered by the board last summer. It remains to be seen whether or not United will be receptive to his approach.
De Ligt In Tenuous United Link
Manchester United are being linked with Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt although the link is most tenuous at present.
De Ligt has been strongly linked with interest from Barcelona and was the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur last summer.
But rumours have begun to circulate about his interest in a move to Old Trafford. De Ligt ‘liked’ an Instagram post by Rio Ferdinand celebrating the 11th anniversary of Manchester United’s Champions League triumph in Moscow.
The link is certainly a light one. United were interested in de Ligt but scout Marcel Bout warned them that his weight could balloon and the interest wasn’t pursued.
The 19-year-old has gone on to guide Ajax to the Eredivise title as well as a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League when they were knocked out by Tottenham Hotspur.
Barcelona have been in talks over a possible move for de Ligt but the talks have come to nothing. However, de Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola has since picked up a world-wide transfer ban that runs to the day after the Premier League’s transfer deadline in August. Barca could pick up the negotiations after the ban expires as La Liga’s deadline isn’t until the end of August. However, it looks to be curtains for United’s interest before it starts.
