Winger On His Way?
Arsenal look set to sell winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer according to reports.
The 30-year-old has struggled since arriving from Manchester United in January 2018 as part of the deal that took Alexis Sanchez to Old Trafford.
Arsenal appeared to have got the better deal at first having swapped a player with less than six months to run on his contract with someone who had over two years left on his contract at United.
But Mkhitaryan has failed to adapt to life at Arsenal. He scored six goals in 39 games and provided seven assists in the season just ended.
The Armenia international was the subject of controversy this week when he was ruled out of next week’s Europa League Final with Chelsea in Baku because of political tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Mkhitaryan earns £180,000 a week with Arsenal and the size of his wages are a factor in the Gunners wanting to offload him. They are looking to cut down on the wage bill and both Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil are in the firing line. Like Mkhitaryan, the Germany international is under contract until 2021.
However, both players have turned 30 and neither will be keen to take a pay cut. Arsenal may find it difficult to shift either.
Arsenal will join Manchester United in the race for the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot.
The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of next month and has been linked with interest from Barcelona. But he failed to put pen to paper in January and the La Liga winners are believed to have dropped their interest.
Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck is being linked with a move to Everton. The 28-year-old has been told he won’t be offered a new deal by the Gunners. However, he is back in training after suffering an ankle injury in a Europa League match with Sporting Lisbon in November.
The Toffees are in pole position to sign the former England international and can offer him a return to his native north-west. West Ham United, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Wolves are also interested.
