Cech Talks About Chelsea Speculation
Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has issued a statement about his future following speculation over a move back to Chelsea.
The 37-year-old becomes a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the season. However, reports on Tuesday linked him with a move to his former club as their new sporting director.
The news has alarmed Arsenal fans. Cech is line to play his final game for the Gunners when they take on Chelsea in the Europa League Final in Baku next Wednesday.
Cech has attempted to defuse the situation by taking to Twitter last night. He insisted that no decision has been made about his future and that he will wait until the season has ended before he makes up his mind over his future.
“Despite the news today as I had already said to everybody before , I’ll make decision about my future after the last game . Now my sole focus is to win the EL with @Arsenal”
But the news has angered Gunners fans. The Europa League winners go straight into the Champions League group stages next season. Chelsea have already qualified for Europe’s top competition after finishing in the top four of the Premier League.
The financial implications are huge. Winning the Europa League pales into insignificance when compared to the riches of even competing in the Champions League. Both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have earned around £80 million from this season’s competition – Manchester United weren’t far behind.
Should Arsenal qualify then much of their earnings will be invested into the squad. That means increased fire-power in the transfer market this summer – a market where they could be expected to compete with Chelsea for some new signings.
Cech’s final appearance for Arsenal may well be as a substitute in Baku.
