Gueye Set For Toffees Exit
Manchester United are being linked with a move for Everton’s £40million-rated midfielder Idrissa Gueye.
The Senegal international looks set to play his final game for the Toffees today when they take on Tottenham Hotspur. Paris Saint-Germain were linked during the January transfer window but Everton dug in their heels and refused to entertain any departure.
PSG look set to make a fresh move. However, according to the Mail On Sunday, United are also interested and could make a better offer.
The one fly in the ointment with regards to this story is Gueye’s age. He is 29 and turns 30 in September – not long after the start of the new season. Everton will demand a transfer fee of around £40million. Last summer, Jose Mourinho came into conflict with Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward when he presented a list of transfer targets all of whom were either 30 years old or were heading for that age. All commanded a considerable transfer fee and the lack of transfer activity at the club was the beginning of the end for the Portugese boss.
The chances of United paying £40million for a player on the verge of turning 30 are somewhat slim and it’s difficult to see the side pursuing Gueye at this stage.
Gueye is seen as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba. But the chances of the Frenchman’s departure have receded with the news that his replacement Mino Raiola has been banned from all transfer activity for the next three months. That will take him beyond the Premier League’s transfer deadline and while Pogba could still sign for a club in, say, Spain or France – though not Italy – beyond the end of his ban. The window in those two countries extends to the end of August. In Italy the deadline, like the Premier League, is earlier in the month just before the season starts. United are likely to place barriers in his way without a replacement already in place.
