Togo Defender Part Of Surprise Getafe Side
Arsenal are interested in the Getafe central defender Djene according to reports from Spain.
The Madrid-based newspaper Marca claims the Gunners are monitoring the 27-year-old with a view to a possible summer move.
Arsenal are almost certain to be in the market for a new centre-back this summer although any move will depend on the sale of Shkodran Mustafi.
Togo international Djene has been part of a Getafe side that have surprised many in Spain with a run to the verge of Champions League qualification. The club – based just outside Madrid – currently occupy one of the automatic Champions League spaces although they lead Sevilla on goal difference only and sixth place Valencia by just one point.
Djene is 27 and is in his second season with Getafe. He moved to the club for a €2.5million transfer fee in 2017 from Belgian side Sint-Truidense having previously spent two seasons with Spanish lower-league side Alcorcon between 2014 and 2016.
He has 30 caps for Togo having made his international debut in 2012. However, any transfer to Arsenal may be made more complex by the news that he doesn’t have an EU passport.
Djene’s release clause stands at €35 million – around £30 million. But while Getafe president Angel Torres has already said that he would be willing to sell him for less than that amount, the cash on offer for qualifying for the Champions League makes it less of a financial imperative to sell Djene with a top-four finish.
