PSG Put Hefty Price Tag On Young Defender
Arsenal will have to pay €20million (currently worth around £17.2million) if they want to sign Christopher Nkunku from Paris Saint-Germain.
The 21-year-old has been in and out of the PSG side this season and a lack of minutes has led him to reject the offer of a new deal from the French club.
According to reports, PSG are willing to allow Nkunku to leave if they receive a bid somewhere in the region of €20million.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery tried to sign Nkunku during the January transfer window. However, PSG weren’t willing to allow the central defender to leave on loan and tried to hold out for a permanent transfer. The Gunners weren’t in a position to spend any money in January and their only signing in the winter market was a loan deal for the Barcelona winger Denis Suarez. The Spaniard has failed to make the Gunners’ starting line-up and a groin injury has prematurely ended his season.
Talks have taken place – most likely between Arsenal and Nkunku. However, they are at an early stage.
Emery is expected to be in the market for a new defender this summer with Shkodran Mustafi expected to be offered for sale. But the Germany international stands at £14million in the Arsenal books and while the club are willing to reinvest income from players sales into new signings it remains to be seen whether that figure would be affected by any book loss.
Otherwise, Emery will have a transfer budget this summer of £40million. That figure could rise if the Gunners make it into the Champions League although a passage via winning the Europa League looks to be the best chance they have. Arsenal take on Valencia in a semi-final first leg tie on Thursday evening.
