Arsenal Plan Player Sales
Arsenal are ready for a clear-out this summer with a number of players set to leave according to at least one newspaper report today.
In what is a highly speculative piece, the Daily Mail believes that centre-back Skhodran Mustafi is one of the players Arsenal will listen to offers for this summer. The Germany international could be joined on the list of players the Gunners are prepared to leave by Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mohamed Elneny and Carl Jenkinson. Calum Chambers and David Ospina will also be sold once their loan spells end at Fulham and Napoli.
Coach Unai Emery has a transfer budget this summer estimated at between £40million and £45million. That figure could be boosted by another £20-30million by qualification for the Champions League.
But Emery could also be given additional funds from the sale of players.
Mkhitaryan, Elneny and Jenkinson are the players most likely to leave. All three will cost relatively low fees although Mkhitaryan’s £180,000-a-week wages could be a problem for any potential purchaser.
It’s a similar story for Ozil. The Germany international earns £350,000 a week and that was a huge stubmling block for Inter Milan when they tried to sign him in the January transfer window.
Ozil has already said that he is happy to remain with Arsenal and while that may well be the case it’s because he realises he would struggle to earn a similar wage elsewhere.
The situation with Mustafi falls into a similar category. He earns £90,000 a week and the £35million Arsenal paid Valencia for him in 2016 means he still has a book value of £14million with two years left on his contract.
Arsenal tried to sell Mustafi last summer but both the fee and his salary were a problem. It could be the same again this time.
