Arsenal Boss Emery Speaks Up For Mustafi

Fans Criticise Defender

Shkodran Mustafi Arsenal news

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has defended centre-back Shkodran Mustafi over his performance against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Germany international was at fault for two of Palace’s goals as the Gunners went down to a 3-2 home defeat. He came under fire from the club’s fans after the game.

Mustafi lost Palace striker Christian Benteke at a free-kick giving the Belgian a free header for his first Premier League goal in almost a year. He then allowed Wilfried Zaha to nip in for the third goal following a loss communication with keeper Bernd Leno.

Speaking after the match, Emery tried to speak up for the player.

“Sometimes he plays very well, sometimes he doesn’t do brilliant,” Emery said. “I prefer to speak about the consistency in the season.

“I think we are, every player, helping and playing with a big performance. Today also when you can defend against players like Benteke and Zaha you can suffer more than maybe in other situations.

“If today we were better in the set pieces we could have won this match. Also we controlled with possession but in attacking thirds they defended their goal and box very well. We didn’t find the best situations to score.

“In all the season I think he is being consistent.”

The result meant Arsenal failed to take advantage of defeats for both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United to move into third place and increase their chances of qualification for the Champions League.

It keeps Arsenal in fourth place in the Premier League apoint behind Spurs ahead of Chelsea on goal difference. Manchester United are two points behind in sixth place.
