Liverpool On Alert
Liverpool transfer target Timo Werner won’t sign a new contract with RB Leipzig, the German side have confirmed.
Werner, who has scored 18 goals in 31 games in all competitions for Leipzig this season, was linked with interest from Liverpool in each of the past two summers. But the Bundesliga outfit insisted he was going nowhere.
Now, with one year left on his current deal, Werner has told Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff that he isn’t interested in a new deal.
“We want to extend it with him, but he has signalled to us that he would rather not extend,” Mintzlaff told Sky Deutschland at the weekend.
Whether Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp would still be interested in signing Werner remains to be seen. The Reds chief has already indicated that he isn’t interested in making any big-money signings this summer. Werner would surely come in to that category.
Leipzig coach Ralf Rangnick said recently that the club were trying hard to persuade Werner to stay.
“We’re trying to keep him,” he said. “He knows he’s very popular in the team, with the coach and the fans.”
