Spurs Man Linked
Arsenal are being linked with a surprising and somewhat unlikely-sounding move for the Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgium international is out of contact in the summer of 2020 after Spurs activated a one-year extension clause in his current deal. However, another clause in his contract will allow him to leave for a cut-price fee of £25million after 26 July this year.
Manchester United have been strongly linked with Alderweireld but according to The Sun, Arsenal are also keeping tabs on his situation and could make a move of their own.
The Gunners will be restricted to a summer transfer budget of around £40million if they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season. That means scrambling around for bargain-basement buys. Alderweireld falls into that category.
But the chances of a Tottenham player joining their north London rivals are slim. It’s a path that few players have trod the most noteable in recent times being that of Sol Campbell who left Spurs for Arsenal on a free transfer in 2001.
Chelsea and Manchester City have also been linked with Alderweireld. But the west London side face a two-window transfer ban which would rule them out while at 30 years old City will be put off by his age.
