Overmars, Zubizaretta Are Main Candidates
Arsenal have begun interviewing candidates for the new role of technical director.
The club decided last summer to make the appointment although head of recruitment Sven Mislintat was ruled out of contention, a move that led to his departures from the club.
The former Roma director Monchi was initially the favourite to land the job. Monchi was sacked by Roma in March following a spend of €105million last summer that has seen the side eliminated two rounds earlier in the Champions League while running the risk of failing to qualify for next season’s competition.
But Monchi has elected to return to his former club Sevilla so it’s back to the drawing-board for Arsenal.
There are two main candidates. One is the former Arsenal midfielder Marc Overmars. However, he is under contract at Ajax until 2020 having overseen a successful campaign of recruitment and youth development.
The other candidate is Andoni Zubizaretta. The Spaniard is well known to Arsenal director Raul Sanllehi who is leading the recruitment drive. ‘Zubi’ held a similar position at Barcelona when Sanllehi was a director at the Nou Camp.
Zubizaretta is now at Marseille and French newspaper L’Equipe claims he is ready to quit the club and moved to the Emirates.
Arsenal are hoping to fill the position in the coming months but with Mislintat now off the scene it could put them at a disadvantage for the forthcoming transfer window.
