Forward Was Close To A Move Last Summer
Barcelona have cooled their interest in Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann and are unlikely to make a fresh approach for the Frenchman.
The Catalan side were keen on Griezmann last summer, but instead he signed a new deal with Atletico worth €23million a season. He also insisted the club sign Thomas Lemar and offer a new deal to Lucas Hernandez – both of which happened.
Griezmann, Hernandez and Diego Simeone all look set to leave Atletico this summer – if reports from Spain are to be believed. However, Barcelona are cool on a fresh move for Griezmann. His wages and the €70million signing of Frenkie de Jong from Ajax are two factors. Plus Barca are ready spend €50million on Eintracht Frankfurt’s 21-year-old Serbian striker Luka Jovic.
Even the proposed sale of Phillippe Coutinho may not change the mind of coach Ernesto Valverde and the Barcelona technical secretariat which handles player transfers and recruitment.
Both Coutinho and Griezmann are being linked with interest from Manchester United. But Barcelona will demand over €100million for a player that cost them €120million when they bought him from Liverpool at the start of January 2018. While United are being linked Paris Saint-Germain are believed to be the favourites to secure Coutinho’s signature – should he be sold.
United’s interest in Griezmann is largely historic. They looked set to sign him in the summer of 2017 only for the France international to decided to stay with Atletico after they were hit with a two-window transfer ban. The pay-off was that he got a new contract.
Griezmann has spent his entire professional career in Spain and is thought to prefer a stay in La Liga over a move to the Premier League.
