Bundesliga Side Put In Huge Offer
Arsenal face competition from Bayern Munich for Lille winger Nicolas Pepe according to reports from France. The Bundesliga side appear to be in pole position to sign the Ivory Coast international.
Arsenal have been tracking Pepe all season. The 23-year-old has scored 17 goals so far this campaign.
But according to BeIn Sports in France, Bayern have stolen a march on their rivals by offering a £70million transfer fee. If true it would blow Arsenal’s interest out of the water. The Gunners have a summer transfer budget which is believed to be around £40-45million.
Bayern see Pepe as the long-term replacement for Arjen Robben who is expected to depart at the end of the season. However, they want a deal done early in order to avoid a summer of long, drawn-out negotiations.
Lille owner Gerard Lopez stated recently that he would demand “between €50million and €80million” before he considers a departure for Pepe. Bayern’s bid – if true – places them towards the top end of that range.
Arsenal are expected to be back in for a new winger this summer. They have an option to sign Denis Suarez from Barcelona on a permanent basis. But he has failed to impress since he arrived on loan at the end of January. His eight substitute appearances for the club have amounted to a total of less than 90 minutes’ football.
