Martins Was Linked In January
Arsenal are considering a summer bid for the Portugese winger Gelson Martins.
The 23-year-old is currently on loan at Ligue 1 strugglers Monaco having only joined Atletico Madrid last summer. He moved to the La Liga side from Sporting Lisbon having torn up his contract after the club’s training facility was invaded by around 50 thugs angry at the side’s failure to qualify for the Champions League. The attack came after the first-team squad were condemned by president Bruno de Carvalho.
But the move to Atletico has so far failed to work out and he made just eight league appearances in the first half of the season – seven of which came as a substitute.
Martins was loaned out to Monaco in January. However, Arsenal were also interested and that interest is likely to be re-ignited in the summer.
The Portugal international has played eight games for Monaco but he has impressed for the side scoring three goals in the process.
The Lisbon-based newspaper A Bola claims Arsenal are monitoring his situation. However, the case of his exit from Sporting is currently with Fifa after Atletico failed to come to an agreement over any transfer fee. It is expected the La Liga outfit will have to pay €15million in compensation.
If Arsenal do land Martins it is likely to be as a replacement for Denis Suarez. The 25-year-old arrived on loan from Barcelona at the end of January but has failed to impress so far.
