Liverpool Keen On Benfica Defender

Ferreira Linked

Liverpool are being linked with a world-record bid for Benfica central defender Francisco Reis Ferreira.

The 21-year-old has only played nine first-team matches for Benfica with the first of those coming last month. He made his debut in a 10-0 victory over Nacional when he got on the scoresheet with the sixth goal in the 56th minute. It was first of his three goals for the club.

But according to Record newspaper in Lisbon, Liverpool have made an approach to Benfica about a possible summer move. The Reds are aware that a number of top European clubs have been watching Ferreira for some time. He has spent the last three-and-a-half seasons playing for Benfica’s B team in Portugal’s second division.

Liverpool offered to take Ferreira on loan in 2017 with the option of a £10million transfer. That was rejected by Benfica and Record claims this latest approach has been greeted in a similar manner.

Ferreira has since signed a new contract with Benfica that contains a release clause of €100million (£85million). It is this fee that has led to claims about a world-record fee – which it would be for a defender. That record is currently held by Liverpool who paid Southampton £75million for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.

Liverpool have been keeping close tabs on Benfica. They were linked with a move for promising young winger Joao Felix in January. However, a bid of £61million was rejected by Benfica who are taking a hard line about keeping their up-and-coming players.
