Perez Threatens To Sell Skipper
Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos clashed in the side’s dressing room with club president Florentino Perez following Tuesday night’s shock Champions League exit.
Real’s three-year grip on the title came to an end when they were beaten 4-1 by Ajax to go out 5-3 on aggregate.
After the match, Perez went down to the dressing room to remonstrate with the players telling them they were to blame for the side’s elimination.
Ramos was suspended for the second leg and didn’t play on Tuesday. However, he was present in the dressing room and he told Perez that he was warned last summer that the club needed to sign a new striker. The feeling amongst the squad is that the side haven’t adequately replaced Cristiano Ronaldo. Gareth Bale has stepped up to assume the Portugese legend’s mantle but has had a disappointing season and looks set to be sold this summer.
Ramos and Perez argued in front of members of coaching and medical staff. Perez told Ramos that he would kick him out of the club. Ramos replied that he would have to pay up the rest of his contract and that he would leave with his head held high.
Reports of the clash have been independently verified by Spanish newspapers Marca and AS.
Real Madrid have seen their season fall apart in the space of a week. They were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Barcelona last week and saw any slim hopes of gaining ground in the league snuffed out with Barca’s win in El Clasico last weekend. That was followed by Tuesday night’s dramatic Champions League exit.
Coach Santi Solari looks set to be removed in the summer with Jose Mourinho the favourite to replace him.
