Forward Back On Reds’Wish-List
Liverpool have been in contact with RB Leipzig over forward Timo Werner according to reports from Germany.
The Reds have been linked with Werner over the past two summers and according to Sport Bild Liverpool are looking to make it third time lucky for the 23-year-old. The Reds have made a formal approach to Leipzig asking them about Werner’s availability.
Werner is out of contract at the end of next season. But he is dragging his heels over a new contract amidst rumours he is looking to move on. He has been open in the past over a move to Anfield although Leipzig’s top management have consistently ruled out the option of an exit.
The Germany international has scored 14 goals in 25 appearances for Leipzig so far this season. That compares with 21 in 45 games last season and 21 in 32 games in his first season for the club, 2016-17.
But while Liverpool are still being linked with Werner, rumours in Germany last week claimed Bayern Munich had already come to an agreement. That led to a sharp rebuke from Leipzig’s sporting director Ralf Rangnick.
“A possible agreement is impossible for 2019. We would have to agree, and we have not,” insisted Rangnick.
“Nobody has approached us from Bayern. There will not be a case like Leon Goretzka and Robert Lewandowski between us and Timo Werner.
“This option does not exist and we do not need to talk about this scenario.
“Clubs that want him will report in the summer and then we will find a fair, mutually agreed solution. Everything else is not an option.”
Rumours in Germany claim Werner has been offered a new deal to stay with Leipzig that would see his wages double to the equivalent of £100,000 a week.
