Neville Believes Ole Will Be A Shoo-In
Manchester United should offer the manger’s job to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a permanent basis if the side defeat Liverpool on Sunday.
That’s the view of former United legend Gary Neville who believes that victory over the Premier League leaders will cap a run of impressive results over some of England’s top sides.
United have won eight and drawn one of the nine Premier League games Solskjaer has taken charge of since he succeeded Jose Mourinho on a temporary basis just before Christmas.
The Norwegian is favourite to land the job permanently although he faces competition from the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane. But Neville believes a win at Old Trafford over United’s Merseyside rivals should seal the post for Solskjaer.
“Two or three months ago he would have been hopeful of getting the job, but if he beats Liverpool on Sunday then I can’t see any way he wouldn’t get it,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“It shouldn’t be defined by one game but to beat Chelsea , Tottenham , Arsenal and then Liverpool it would almost make it impossible for him not to get the job.
“It is an incredible body of results and would make it a lot more difficult to withhold it from him if he keeps beating team after team.”
The Manchester United board are insisting that any decision will be made at the end of the current season. But the minimum requirement for any manager is a top-four finish. If the Red Devils achieve that – and they currently occupy the fourth and final Champions League spot – then in theory the job should be Solskjaer’s.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and co-chairman Joel Glazer recently met with Solskjaer’s agent and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the Norwegian has already been told the job will be his if he clinches Champions League qualification.
