Names In The Frame To Succeed Sarri
Chelsea have identified Derby County manager Frank Lampard and former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane as candidates to replace Maurizio Sarri.
The Italian is walking a tightrope following a poor run of form that has seen defeats of 4-0 and 6-0 to Bournemouth and Manchester City respectively as well as elimination from the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester United on Monday night.
Reports have suggested that Sarri could even be sacked this week although Chelsea face City again in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley on Sunday. Before that they have a Europa League Round of 32 second-leg clash at home to Malmo. The Blues hold a 2-1 lead from the first leg.
Sky Sports claims Chelsea could appoint assistant manager Gianfranco Zola as caretaker-manager before appointing a permanent replacement at the end of the season.
Lampard has impressed at Derby since taking over at the Championship side before the start of the season. He has guided the side to within two points of the play-offs.
Zidane has been out of work since leaving Real following their third successive Champions League triumph with a 3-1 victory over Liverpool in May. But the Frenchman insists he won’t take over a side part-way through the season.
Chelsea fans appear to have lost patience with Sarri. The side were booed off following their 2-0 defeat to United on Monday. Sarrl’s substitutions also attracted some flak from supporters.
