Liverpool transfer target Nabil Fekir is set to sign a new contract with French side Lyon.

The 25-year-old was close to a move to Anfield last summer when the two clubs shook hands on a £53million transfer. But the results of Fekir’s medical gave the Reds cause for concern and they tried to force the Ligue 1 club into taking a lower fee. The concern was over the state of Fekir’s knee following an old cruciate ligament injury.

Chelsea were interested in the January transfer window but failed to get a deal over the line.

Fekir’s contract with Lyon expires at the end of the 2019-20 season and talks are under way over a new deal.

“We have made some advances in Fekir’s contract extension, we are discussing it and soon I’ll have to see Nabil,” Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said on Friday. “We aren’t in the final stages but in any case we have advanced.”

Fekir has scored 10 goals for Lyon so far this season.
