Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu believes Lionel Messi will sign a new deal with the Catalan side.

Messi signed his most recent deal with the club in November 2017. That contract expires in 2021 and saw Messi receive a signing-on fee of €50million plus a further €500,000 a week in wages.

But speaking to RKB on Wednesday, Bartomeu insisted there was no chance Messi will leave the Nou Camp.

“Leo Messi will continue with us,” Bartomeu said. “He is a club player and the relationship will continue forever.”

Messi turns 32 this summer and will be 34 when his current deal expires. Any subsequent contract is likely to mean he will end his career with Barcelona.

Bartomeu added that full-back Jordi Alba is also likely to sign a new deal.

“He has told us that he wants to continue,” Bartomeu said. “We have offered him a new contract over five years and I hope we will continue discussing the deal.”

There has also been talk of coach Ernesto Valverde being replaced in the summer although Bartomeu suggested he too could still be at the club at the start of next season regardless of what happens in this campaign.

“I believe he will stay,” the Barca chief said. “He trusts his players and it is only his second season in charge.

“The goal is to finish the season strong and win everything. I trust him to lead the team and even if we do not win anything, he will continue to coach the team.”
