Gbamin Back On Arsenal Radar But Fee Could Be A Problem
Arsenal could be priced out of a move for Mainz centre-back Jean-Phillippe Gbamin.
The Gunners were interested last summer in the 23-year-old and the Sunday Express claims Unai Emery will revive his interest at the end of the season.
But Mainz have put a £40million price tag on the France-born Ivory Coast international and that could scupper any prospect of a bid from Arsenal. The Gunners’ entire transfer budget for this summer is estimated at £40-45million meaning that a move for Gbamin may have to be at least partially financed by player sales.
The north London club made only one signing in the January transfer window with the arrival of Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona. But Arsenal have an option to purchase Suarez on a permanent basis this summer in a deal that would be worth around £22million.
Mainz may be forced to lower their fee if Gbamin decides he wants to leave.
“I basically feel ready for the next step and can well imagine starting a new chapter,” he said recently.
Arsenal are also keeping tabs on Norwich City central defender Ben Godfrey. The Gunners will have a scout at today’s East Anglian derby match between Norwich and Ipswich Town to take a check on the 21-year-old.
Manchester United, Lyon and RB Leipzig are also being linked.
