Annual Pursuit Set To Take Place
Manchester United are being linked once again with Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane. However, it’s an old story and one that looks like having the usual ending.
United have been linked with Varane since before he signed for Real Madrid in 2011. The then teenager was with French side Lens and looked set to move to Old Trafford in a deal that would have been worth around £10million. But Zinedine Zidane – then part of the back-room team at the Bernabeu – intervened and managed to persuade Varane to make the move to Spain instead of England.
United have been linked with Varane in just about every transfer window since then. There were rumours last summer that Jose Mourinho – who was in charge at Real Madrid when Varane joined the club – was interested. But the France international ruled out any move and Real insisted he wasn’t for sale.
Now the Daily Star believes United could make – note the word ‘could’ – a summer move for Varane if they fail in their bid to sign Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli. It claims there is growing uncertainty at Real Madrid although that could affect any chance of their star players leaving this summer.
But Varane has shown no signs of wanting to leave Real Madrid and that isn’t expected to change.
Pereira Turned Down Brazil Move
Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira admitted he was in talks over a move to Brazilian side Santos last month.
Pereira has failed to hold down a regular first-team place at Old Trafford and the self-confessed Santos fan said the move will have to wait until later in his career.
“There was this speculation that I was going to Santos,” he told Esporte Interativo.
“I even talked to the president, but unfortunately it was not possible.
“I also think that I have to finish a more established career here in Europe.
“So later, of course, it’s a dream to play in Santos.
New Deal For Herrera?
Manchester United are in advanced talks with Ander Herrera over a new contract.
The Spaniard’s current deal expires this summer and he admitted this week he could put pen to paper on a new deal.
“I am focusing on Saturday’s game at Fulham,” he said.
“If I deserve a contract I’ll get it. I feel in form.”
Ashley Young and Anthony Martial have both signed new contracts with Manchester United. Talks are taking place with Marcus Rashford and David de Gea.
