Suarez The Only Arrival
Denis Suarez was the only new arrival at Arsenal on transfer deadline day. However, the Barcelona midfielder will only stay with the Gunners until the end of the season.
Arsenal tracked the 25-year-old for much of the early part of the season. But they ran into resistance from Barca who only wanted Suarez to leave on a permanent deal. The Gunners’ stance was that they wanted the option of a permanent transfer in the summer in a move that would have cost them around €20million (£18million).
But in an unexpected move Suarez may end up returning to the Nou Camp in the summer. Rather than leave Barcelona permanently he has signed a new deal with the La Liga side that could keep him there until 2021.
It is thought that a permanent switch could still be on the cards. However, Arsenal will have to pay somewhere between €25million and €30million (£22-26million). The north London club have paid a £2.2million loan fee.
Suarez played under Arsenal boss Unai Emery during a previous loan spell at Sevilla.
Malcom Move Ditched, Smith-Rowe Goes
Arsenal were also in talks with Barcelona over a loan move for Brazilian winger Malcom. However, that move collapsed over the size of the loan fee.
Malcom was tracked by Arsenal last season when he was with Bordeaux but the club lost interest as his transfer fee headed northwards. He ended up moving to Barcelona for just over £36million. However, he has barely played this season and was being tipped to move on.
One player who left the Emirates on transfer deadline day was teenage midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe who joins Bundesliga side RB Leipzig for the rest of the season.
