Martins Set For Monaco Move?
Arsenal look set to lose out to Monaco in the race for Atletico Madrid winger Gelson Martins.
Reports on Monday claimed that the Gunners have put forward a proposal to the Portugal international winger who has failed to make an impression since his arrival at Atletico last summer. He has made just one start in La Liga plus seven appearances off the bench.
But according to the Spanish newspaper Marca, there has been a breakthrough in talks between Monaco and Martins. Given that the Ligue 1 side are struggling in the relegation zone and were thrashed 5-1 at home by Strasbourg at the weekend that news casts some doubt over the seriousness of any approach by the Gunners.
Reports of Arsenal’s interest first appeared in the Portugese press. But that story appeared to be rather speculative in nature.
The Gunners are hamstrung by a lack of cash in the January transfer window. Talks over a loan move for Barcelona forward Denis Suarez are being held back by the La Liga side’s insistence that any permanent transfer must automatically take place in the summer. Arsenal want only an option to purchase.
But Suarez is the club’s number one priority this month and it seems Arsenal are ready to pass up on any deal for Martins in order to concentrate on the Spaniard.
Portugal international Martins left Sporting Lisbon in acrimonious circumstances last summer. The first-team squad were attacked by up to 50 supporters at their training ground after being criticised by president Bruno de Carvalho. Martins was one of a number of players to hand in his notice as a result of the incident. Sporting are still demanding €105million (£92.7million) in compensation from Atletico.
