Gunners Want Loan Move
Arsenal are being linked with a move for Atletico Madrid winger Gelson Martins.
The Portugal international only moved to Atletico last summer as part of an exodus of players from Sporting Lisbon. But the transfer hasn’t worked out well for him. He has made must one start in La Liga and come off the bench on seven occasions for a total of 223 minutes of football since his arrival last summer.
Now, Martins is being linked with a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano with former Arsenal legend Thierry Henry keen to take him to Monaco.
But Portugese newspaper O Jogo claims Arsenal have made “an important proposal” to Martins and to Atletico. The La Liga side are keen to bring in Alvaro Morata from Chelsea and would move Martins on in a bid to raise funds.
The Portugal international left Sporting following an attack on the club’s players at their training ground. He rescinded his contract with the Portugese side who have since put in a claim of €105million from Atletico.
But any Arsenal proposal is likely to be for a loan move rather than a permanent transfer. A second season outside the Champions League, coupled with a £70million transfer spend last summer, means the Gunners are operating under strict financial controls. The club are already in talks with Barcelona over the loan of Denis Suarez but are trying to make a permanent switch an option in the summer rather than compulsory.
If Atletico sign Morata on loan then it could make Arsenal’s task easier, but Chelsea are looking for a permanent deal for the Spaniard.
