Manolas In Fresh Manchester United Link
Manchester United could pay Kostas Manolas’s £34million release clause with Roma as they look to solve their defensive problems.
The Greece international was linked with United in the summer although no bid was forthcoming and rumours last week suggested they could slap in a bid this month.
Manolas is regarded as one of the best central defenders in the Premier League while United’s defence – while shored up under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – is still a source of some concern for the Red Devils.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is ready for a summit this week in which he will discuss the prospect of signing one of a short-list of three names this month. That goes against recent rumours suggesting that Solskjaer would only be allowed loan transfers this month.
United, Real In Tussle For Defender
Meanwhile, Manchester United and Real Madrid could battle it out for the FC Porto defender Eder Militao.
The 20-year-old has been watched by both clubs with reports last month linking United with a possible bid of €50million (£45million).
Militao arrived in Portugal during the summer and has made 12 appearances in the league, five in the Champions League and three more in the Portugese Cup.
Scouts from Real Madrid have watched him live on a number of occasions in recent weeks and their reports have been positive both in terms of his playing performance and his personality.
It is thought that Militao doesn’t have an EU passport. That means he wouldn’t automatically qualify for a UK work permit. He hasn’t played a competitive international for Brazil and he only made his international debut in September when he played in a friendly win over El Salvador.
However, the size of the fee – now a factor in these matters – would be on his side if United pay £45million. The greater the transfer fee the better the chance of securing a work permit.
