Mourinho Scouted Defender In October
Manchester United are set to discuss the possibility of a move for Fiorentina central defender Nikola Milenkovic.
The Serbia international was first linked with United last October after then manager Jose Mourinho personally scouted Milenkovic when he played in an international match against Montenegro.
Fiorentina value the 21-year-old at €50million (£45million). According to reports, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is set to sit down with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to discuss a potential bid.
Godin In New United Link
Manchester United are once again being linked with Atletico Madrid central defender Diego Godin.
Uruguay international Godin was linked last summer with a move to Old Trafford after the Red Devils indicated they were prepared to pay his release fee of €20million (worth around £18million at current exchange rates). But that was after they were approached by his agent. With that news, the agent returned to Madrid and demanded a pay rise for his client and Godin now earns around €7.5million a year after tax. United were prepared to pay him £150,000 a week.
But there was no contract extension and Godin’s current deal expires at the end of the season. He’s unhappy that he hasn’t been offered a new contract and looks set to move on.
Coach Diego Simeone spoke to reporters on Saturday about the situation.
“The club and Godin know what I think about this. If he does remain with us, it’ll be because it’s best for him and the club,” Simeone said.
Whether United would still be interested must be in doubt. Godin turns 33 next month and the club’s initial interest came as some surprise. It’s difficult to see United making a move even in a free transfer in the summer.
