Chelsea Defender Ruled Out
Arsenal manager Unai Emery says the club have not talked about a move for Chelsea central defender Gary Cahill.
The former England international looks set to leave Stamford Bridge this month after falling down the pecking order under Maurizio Sarri. But when asked about a possible move to the Emirates, Emery poured cold water on the prospect.
“We did not speak about him,” Emery said after the Gunners’ 4-1 victory over Fulham on New Years’ Day.
Arsenal have an injury crisis at centre back with Rob Holding out for the rest of the season and Shkodran Mustafi the latest casualty. He limped out of yesterday’s game at half time although Emery insisted after the match that it was just a “small injury”.
Sporting director Raul Sanllehi has said he doesn’t intend for the club to sign any new players in January, but Emery suggested there may be one or two new faces.
“It’s not easy, improving our team in the transfer market, but the club is working, watching different possibilities,” he said. “Maybe we can sign one or two players.”
That opens up the prospect of loan signings rather than permanent deals.
