Call Came After Liverpool Defeat
Jose Mourinho was sacked by Manchester United following a phone call to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward by one of the club’s top players.
Mourinho was given the boot last week by United after the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. The side have suffered their worst start to a Premier League season in 28 years.
But according to The Times, Woodward received a phone call after the match from one of the club’s senior professionals demanding that Mourinho be fired. There then followed a series of late-night phone calls between Woodward and members of the club’s ruling Glazer family and Mourinho was given the order of the boot last Tuesday. He was called from the club’s training ground for a meeting with Woodward in which he expected to discuss transfer targets for the January window. Instead, he was told he was being dismissed.
The Times doesn’t give the identity of the player concerned and that alone must raise doubts about the veracity of the report.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in charge of the side until the end of the season. He opened his reign with a 5-1 win at Cardiff City last Saturday. United take on Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.
