Reds, Barcelona Linked With Move
The agent of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder and Liverpool transfer target Adrien Rabiot has hit out at the French club after it said he would not be considered for selection for the rest of the season.
Rabiot’s agent, his mother Veronique Rabiot, informed the club that the 23-year-old wants to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season. Sporting director Antero Henrique responded by saying that Rabiot will sit out the rest of the season in the stands.
But speaking to French radio station RTL on Wednesday, Ms Rabiot claims she told Henrique in the summer that her son wanted to leave as there was a proposal on the table from Barcelona. Liverpool have also been linked with Rabiot and are monitoring his situation.
“We have to go back a little bit, and during the summer transfer window, I told Mr. Henrique, as we have to do, that I wanted Adrien to be on the transfer list because he wanted to leave the club,” Ms Rabiot said.
“As it was clearly stated, I do not see how I was being disloyal. There was a proposal from Barcelona during the transfer window.
“The club refused, it has the right to refuse to sell the player, moreover he replied that the proposal was made the day before the closure. But we cannot say they were not aware or that I was disloyal. Then, actually, the situation becomes very complicated since the player can leave [at the end of the season] and the club does not want to let him go. ”
The French players’ union, the UNFP, has come out on the side of Rabiot who found himself in a similar situation four years ago when his previous contract was running down. On that occasion, PSG put him in the reserves playing in France’s fourth division and wouldn’t consider him again until he siged a new deal.
“The situation was the same four years ago,” Ms Rabiot added. “We always say that the situation is complicated with us. I do not see how complicated it is. It’s very simple, Adrien wants to leave, the club does not want to let him go.But everyone knows in the world of football that these practices take place: the player is no longer playing so he can sign his extension.
“At that time Adrien was 19 years old, he did not resist, he signed an extension. Today he is 23. What he does today, he buys his freedom . ”
Liverpool could make a move in the January transfer window especially as Barcelona are more willing to wait until the end of the season when they can sign him for nothing. But Ms Rabiot insists that a January sale is up to the club. However, she added that reports of an agreement with Barcelona are nothing more than rumours.
“We cannot speak with any club before 1 January and we will not speak with any club before 1 January,” she added.
