Talks Under Way
Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has been offered to Barcelona according to reports from Spain.
The misfiring Spaniard is having another difficult season in front of goal with seven goals in 20 appearances for the west London side. That compares with 15 in 48 games last season.
The Catalan radio station RAC1 claims the 26-year-old has been offered to Barcelona with Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri ready to pull the plug on Morata’s career at Stamford Bridge. The player himself is said to be unhappy in London and would be keen on a move back to Spain.
But Chelsea look set to take a huge hit. Morata cost the club around £60million when they bought him from Real Madrid in the summer of 2017. Barcelona would be looking at a steep discount to that figure while Chelsea are likely to dig in their heels anxious not to take a hit that would damage them under Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules. For them not to book a loss they would have realise his amortisation value. Given that he is a year-and-a-half into a five-year contract they need to receive at least £42million. That isn’t a price Barcelona are willing to pay.
The La Liga leaders are expected to offer Chelsea the option of a loan deal for Morata either to the end of this season or even an 18-month loan running to the end of the 2019-20 season. There would also be an option for a permanent deal at the end of the loan period.
