Messi Scuppers Arsenal Hopes
Arsenal’s hopes of signing Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele have taken a hit following comments by Lionel Messi.
The Gunners have been linked with a January move for the France international whose time at the Nou Camp has been a disappointment since his £105million move from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017.
Dembele picked up a hamstring injury early on during his time with the La Liga side that saw him miss four months of last season. He then struggled to get back into the team and although he has become more of a regular this season there has still been talk about a possible move.
The 21-year-old was linked with Arsenal when he was with Rennes, the club he left in 2016 to join Dortmund, and rumours began to circulate about a possible loan move to the Gunners when the possibility was floated about an exit.
But the player says he is “committed” to Barcelona and Messi appears to have poured cold water on the prospect of a move.
“He is an excellent player, with a lot of potential and will help us a lot,” the Argentine said. “He is totally committed to the team. Now he is more responsible and is showing it in the field.
“It must continue like this, and I am convinced that it will.”
Rumours of Arsenal’s interest have come despite remarks made by director of football Raul Sanllehi that the club wouldn’t be signing any new players in January. The Gunners spent almost £70million in the transfer market during the summer.
