Growing Interest In Turk
Arsenal are in pole position in the race for Roma midfielder Cengiz Under.
The Gunners were first linked with Under back in March of this year and Turkish news outlet Aksam claims Arsenal have already seen a bid of €30million (£26million) rejected by the Serie A side.
But sources in Italy claim that Roma have yet to receive any bids. Arsenal scouts watched Under in action in this weekend’s 2-2 draw with Inter Milan. The 21-year-old scored a superb equaliser to give his side a share of the points. That went some way to making up for his open-goal miss in the recent Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
Under has been linked with a new contract at Roma, but sporting director Monchi insists no talks are planned over a new deal. The Turkey international currently earns €1million a year after tax but including bonuses and is one of the lowest-paid members of the Roma squad.
Monchi’s remarks have led to speculation that Under looks set to leave the Serie A side. Arsenal have ruled out adding to their squad in January. But they will have to up their bid to have any chance of signing him.
Roma are expected to demand around €50million – just under £45million.
Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with Under. Manchester United and Barcelona are also monitoring his progress.
