Bale, Benzema Under Threat
Real Madrid are ready to dip into the transfer market to sign a new striker in January after losing faith in Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.
Reports from Spain claimed over the weekend that Real want to bring in an experienced forward in January before making a big-money signing in the summer. That big name is likely to be one of the Paris Saint-Germain duo of Neymar or Kylian Mbappe with the Brazilian the most obvious candidate.
Both Bale and Benzema started the season well but they soon began to suffer and a barren drought for the side of no goals in 465 minutes of football cost head coach Julen Lopetegui his job.
Bale has scored just three La Liga goals in 11 appearances for the side this season – five in 14 games in all competitions.
Benzema has fared a little better with five in 12 games in La Liga and nine in 17 appearances overall.
Some outlets are speculating over a move for Radamel Falcao but the 32-year-old is also enduring a difficult season at Monaco. He has scored just four goals in 11 games in Ligue 1 for a side that is battling against relegation. Monaco lie in 19th place in the table.
It should be pointed out that the reports in Spain originated in the Catalan newspaper Sport. Papers in Spain and in Catalunya often print wild rumours about Real Madrid and Barcelona. The Madrid-based papers are prone to publish outlandish speculation about Barcelona and the Barcelona-based papers – such as Sport – will print rumours over Real.
But Premier League clubs will have one eye on Gareth Bale’s situation. Tottenham Hotspur have first refusal on the Wales international under the terms of his 2013 move from north London to Real.
Manchester United have also been linked with Bale although the fact that he turns 30 next July will obviously be a factor in whether or not they make any move.
