Manchester United are being linked with a move for the Sampdoria defender Joachim Andersen.

Reports from Italy claim United are ready to make a move for the £30million-rated 21-year-old. However, they will face competition from one of Serie A’s top clubs.

Andersen joined Sampdoria from Dutch side FC Twente in 2017. He made just seven appearances in Serie A during his first season at the club, but he has nailed down a regular first-team place this season and has played every minute of the league campaign to date.

But Italian giants Inter Milan are also being linked. The Serie A side are ready to do a cash-plus-player deal for Andersen: young Argentine forward Facundo Colidio and midfielder Xian Emmers, who is currently on loan at Serie B side Cremonese.

United are in the market for a central defender after failing in their efforts to recruit one in the summer .

Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld remains a target according to some reports although his age – he turns 30 in March – will count against him in January just as it did last summer.

Manchester United are expected to be unusually active in the winter transfer market this season. The Red Devils are rarely active in January but following a disappointing summer market they are set to sign more than one player for the first time since 2009. The club have signed a total of three players in January since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down as manager at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also being linked.
