Serie A Side Could Make January Move
Manchester United central defender Eric Bailly is a January transfer target for Serie A side AC Milan.
The Ivory Coast international has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford with just three starts in the Premier League to his name so far this season. He has also made two substitute appearances in the league and two starts in Carabao Cup and Champions League matches. His last appearance for the first team was when he was substituted after 19 minutes of the 3-2 home win over Newcastle United last month.
Bailly is out of contract at the end of next season and talks have yet to take place over a new deal. Clubs in the Premier League have already shown an interest but ESPN reports that AC Milan have also joined the queue and are keen to know United’s valuation.
United are on the lookout for a new centre-back and the sale of Bailly will help off-set any cost. But good value in the winter market is always hard to come by and United will make sure a replacement is lined up before entering into negotiations over the sale of the 24-year-old Bailly.
Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar and Tottenham Hotspur’s Belgium international Toby Alderweireld are two names often being mentioned. But Skriniar is closing in on a new contract with Inter while Alderweireld’s age – he turns 30 in March of next year – is thought to be a factor that will turn the United board against any move.
The latest name being linked with United is Juventus’s Morocco international Mehdi Benatia. However, as with Alderweireld, his age counts against him. He is 31 years old and, as Mourinho found to his cost this summer, the United board will baulk at paying a huge transfer fee for any player over the age of 30.
